The 3D architectural rendering process

From CAD file to final pixel — the eight steps every professional architectural visualization goes through, and what to expect at each one.

A great architectural render isn't a single click. It's a sequence of decisions — modeling, materials, lighting, camera, color — each of which can make or break the final image. This guide walks through how we (and most professional 3D visualization studios) take a project from raw CAD files to a presentation-ready render. Brief & file intake

We start with your CAD files (DWG, RVT, SKP, 3DM), floor plans, elevations, and reference images. We ask about purpose — investor pitch, marketing, planning approval — because that shapes every decision later. A clear brief here saves weeks downstream.

3D modeling & scene build

We rebuild your geometry in a render-ready package (3ds Max, Blender, or Cinema 4D). CAD geometry is rarely render-ready — walls need thickness, surfaces need correct normals, and details that don't exist in the plan (mullions, hardware, trim) get modeled in.

Materials & texturing

Every surface gets a physically-based material — concrete, glass, brushed metal, wood grain, fabric. We use real-world reference and measured PBR libraries so reflections, roughness, and translucency behave like the actual material. This is where 'CGI' becomes 'photoreal.'

Lighting & atmosphere

Lighting is what sells a render. We set physically-accurate sun position based on latitude, time of day, and season. Interior shots get IES light profiles for fixtures. Atmosphere — haze, god rays, soft shadows — comes from real volumetric simulation, not post-effects.

Camera & composition

We propose 3–6 camera angles before final rendering — hero exterior, eye-level approach, key interior, detail shot. You approve the framing as low-resolution clay renders. This is the cheapest moment to change a viewpoint; once final lighting and materials are locked, camera changes get expensive.

Draft render & feedback round 1

First full-resolution draft delivered with watermark. You mark up anything — material swaps, furniture moves, lighting mood, sky type. We bundle changes into a single revision pass instead of iterating one comment at a time. Most projects need 1–2 rounds; we include 2 in every quote.

Quality control & final render

Before final output we run a checklist: no clipping geometry, correct shadow direction, no fireflies in shadows, color-managed for sRGB or Rec.709, EXIF-clean. Final renders go out at print resolution (300 DPI at intended print size) or 4K for screen.

Delivery & ongoing support

Final files delivered as layered TIFFs or PSDs so your team can adjust signage, post-color, or composite later. We keep project files for 12 months — if you need a new angle, a night version, or a season change, we pick up where we left off instead of rebuilding.

Every final render passes the same checklist before it leaves the studio.

No clipping or intersecting geometry visible in frame
Shadow direction matches sun position and time of day
No fireflies, noise, or render artifacts in shadow areas

Verticals stay vertical (two-point perspective)

Frequently asked questions

How long does a typical architectural render take?

Exterior single-shot from a clean CAD file: 5–7 business days including one revision round. Full set of 6–10 shots: 2–3 weeks. We quote conservative timelines and meet them.

What file formats do you accept?

DWG, DXF, RVT (Revit), SKP (SketchUp), 3DM (Rhino), IFC, OBJ, and FBX. If you only have PDFs of plans and elevations, we can rebuild from those — it adds a day or two of modeling time.

How many revisions are included?

Two full revision rounds per shot are included in every quote. Additional rounds are billed at a flat hourly rate so you know the cost before approving more changes.

Can you match a specific architectural style or render look?

Yes. Send reference images during brief intake. We can match moody Scandinavian, bright Mediterranean, dramatic night-shot, or your existing brand visual style.

A solid QC checklist checks geometry for clipping, verifies shadow direction against the sun position, removes noise and fireflies, confirms materials read correctly at viewing distance, keeps verticals straight, and exports at the right resolution and color space. We run this checklist on every final render before delivery.

Do you handle very large projects — masterplans, multi-tower developments?

Yes. For projects over 10 shots we assign a dedicated lead artist and weekly check-ins. Largest delivery to date: 47 shots across a township masterplan.
